Building our own City

One of my favorite makerspace we did was building our own city.  Before we built our city, we talked about all of the different parts of a city.  In cities there is a post office, police department, fire hall, stores, car washes, etc.  Our goal was to make the BEST city we could.  Everyone was in charge of their own part of the city. We had a road commissioner, park department, hotel builder and home designer. This makerspace gave students the sense of organizing and building a functional city.  We were able to repurpose an old shoe box to become a hotel, and toilet paper tubes to become trees.  Although it may look like a big pile of trash at first glance, my students were able to make it their own city and they took ownership for their learning.
